Adventures on the Indian River and Southern Space Coast Beaches in August 2013
Looking for some interesting outdoor activities in August? The Barrier Island Center is always a great place to check out for events and naturalist activities out of the ordinary. August 2013 is no different. The current planned events are provided below for those who would like to explore more of Florida’s Space Coast coastal areas.

Explore some of the scheduled activities planned for the Barrier Island Center in August.MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – Turtle Talks, diversity of life on Indian River Lagoon and a Paddle Boarding Adventures highlight planned events in August at the Barrier Island Center, 8385 Florida A1A, Melbourne Beach.Turtle Talks, every Wednesday at 8 a.m.: Join us to explore the beach in search of sea turtle tracks and watch sea turtle biologists evaluate a nest that has recently hatched.“Sea Stars!” Touch Tank, Saturday, Aug. 3, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Come meet our “Sea Stars” and learn about the diversity of life in the Indian River Lagoon.
Little Stewards Story Time, Saturday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m.: Join Sea Turtle Advokid, Cori McWilliams, for “Happy Hermit Crab… A Tale of Shell Seekers.”
Beach Clean Up, Saturday, Aug. 17, at 9 a.m. Do your part for nesting and hatchling sea turtles by keeping our beaches and ocean clean of marine debris.
Oyster Mat Making, Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m.: Help the Brevard Zoo create mats to restore oyster reefs in the Mosquito Lagoon.
Paddle Boarding Wildlife Adventure, Saturday, Aug. 24, noon to 1 p.m.: Experience the excitement of walking on water on this one hour tour of the Mullet Creek Preserve! Launch from Honest John’s Fish Camp, 750 Old Florida Trail in Melbourne Beach. Wear water shoes and sunscreen. Take advantage of this special discounted rate of $27. Must be at least 12 years old.
“Home” Eco-Film, Saturday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.: Learn about how life on our planet formed and how we are influencing it today. Find out how you can lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
Other Activities at the Barrier Island Center
The Barrier Island Center is a great destination even when an event is not planned. They are always very informative and have great entertaining films available to view in their theater. If no film is playing, discuss your interests with them and see what they can provide to help you explore our great nature destinations.
The southern area of Brevard County is one of the top nesting areas for a wide variety of sea turtles. You will find a wealth of information and activities related to these unique creatures provided or sponsored by the Barrier Island Center.
The Environmentally Endangered Lands Program hosts a variety of events from July 15 through Sept. 15. Visitors are invited to join its beach explorations as they search for sea turtle tracks and to watch sea turtle biologists evaluate nests which have recently been hatched.
Turtle Walk Reservations are made for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9 p.m. You can join a presentation and guided walk to learn about and observe threatened loggerhead sea turtles nesting on the beaches of the barrier island. Donation of $15 is nonrefundable. Reservations limited to 22 each night. Reservations can only be made online at www.seaturtlewalks.org.
